Kia hiwa rā! Kia hiwa rā! Kia hiwa rā ki tēnei tuku, kia hiwa rā ki tērā tuku. Tihei mauri ora!
This year we are running our first Māori Scholarship programme called “HIWA”.
What is HIWA?
HIWA is a week-long scholarship programme for Māori students who are in their final year of study at a NZ secondary school/wharekura. The purpose of this programme is for students to experience being a student here at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, as well as living in Wellington City. Throughout the week students will attend different workshops with key staff on campus, explore halls of residence, connect with on-campus support, plus explore all the cool things you can do in Wellington (and they’ll get to attend Open Day). There is an application process, and successful students will be selected to attend the programme.
Who is eligible?
Students must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the programme:
- Be of Māori descent
- Have NCEA Level 2 endorsed with Merit or Excellence (or an equivalent for CIE and IB students)
- Attend a school outside of the Wellington Region (Māori students in the Wellington Region will be eligible for Huapae)
- Be in their final year at a NZ secondary school/wharekura.
When is it?
The programme takes place from Tuesday 17 August to Saturday 21 August 2021.
Does it cost the student?
No, this programme will be paid for (flights, accommodation, food etc). They will need to bring money if they want to buy other things.
